  • Bio:

I am a textile artist practicing Japanese shibori shaped resist-dyeing techniques using indigo and other natural dyes from plants, mushrooms, and lichens.

I learned shibori from an aunt who was one of the early practitioners of this art form outside of Japan. Shibori allows me to connect with the traditions of my heritage as well as experiment with novel techniques and materials. Much of my current work focuses on the rice farming landscapes of Yolo County, which produce the sushi rice used in the U.S. I also enjoy exploring the application of shibori techniques using other plant, mushroom, and lichen dyes.

My work has been shown in numerous shows in California, New York, and Japan, and was featured in Fiber Art Now magazine. I am a recipient of awards from the National Collage Society, the California State Fair, Yolo Arts, and the North American Mycological Association, among others. I am a 2026 recipient, along with world-renowned shibori scholar and author, Dr. Yoshiko Wada, of an apprenticeship grant from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts. I have taught shibori and natural dyeing in numerous venues, including at Fibershed in Point Reyes, the Sonoma Mycological Association, and the UC Davis Ecological Garden, and through the Traditional Ecological Knowledge program at the Cache Creek Conservancy. I also work as senior education policy staff in the California Legislature.

I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with other artists, and feel fortunate to be a part of the Arboretum Artworks community.
